Hello TSA friends! I just mailed some books back to Taiwan and it cost me a ton of money. I'm trying to find cheaper ways to ship. Luckily, the coffee shop owner across from my work used to be in the semiconductor industry in Taiwan. He told me about "freight shipping," which is to send items slowly, but cheaply, by ship.
--Send your books from UT, for example, very cheaply. He believes there are shipping offices in Houston, and that they have satellite offices here in Austin.
If anybody knows about this, or can find out, and will share the information, I think it will save our fellow TSA members a lot of trouble and money. I'm going to look, but I'm at work right now + more people searching the search engines will probably get better results (plus some of you may know folks in the business).

I just contacted these people to ask for an estimate and to explain their procedures to me, and will keep you posted. If anybody else finds any info about freight shipping, please post it. I know that international students often have a lot of bulk to ship back home in the form of books and computers, and using a service like this might save us all a lot of money and trouble.
Thanks!!!!

The email to the other company bounced and they never answered my phone call today (Friday), so I have tried emailing this company. Standing by.
Anybody got other contacts in this business?
So far, I'm having some success with these folks:

--Does anybody else have any suggestions or experience with these folks? The costs seem pretty reasonable. Maybe in the future, several of us can ship a bunch of boxes together to/from Taiwan and save a ton of money, split the fees, etc. I will keep you all posted as to my experience from the doorstep pickup in Austin to delivery in Taiwan. If all works smoothly for a US citizen like myself, then it should be easy for all of you who are ROC citizens.

Today, Thursday 20 August, a truck driver picked up my 8 boxes on their behalf from my apartment on West Campus. So far, so good. Next is my pickup of the items in Keelung, or delivery to Taipei, about a month from now. Will keep you posted.

I'm now in Taipei, living in the Gongguan area. My items are due to arrive by ship on 26 September as promised. So far, it looks like I'll have no problem having my items delivered to my apartment--this is great, because I originally had the shipment addressed Care Of a Taiwanese friend until I knew where I would live. These people seem to do the job. Again, I'll notify you after delivery and close the loop on this thread. But I wanted you all to know, in case you have to ship: so far, so good!
--I found these people through the Taiwanese Bamboo Telegraph System and am helping return many favors I have received; it's a great system! OK, time for a flick, conveniently available at CinePlaza at a student price!

Hi everybody; I have my stuff. There was some sort of misunderstanding and my stuff got delivered to the building, but not to my apartment. My landlord ended up bring my 8 boxes up the elevator to my 7th floor apartment. Since all of you are native speakers of Mandarin, you can probably follow up on this service better than I can, especially on the Taiwan end when it comes to having your stuff delivered. Overall, I rate the service as being very good, but when it comes to having your stuff make it to your apartment (not just to your apartment building), as we used to say in the US Army, "there are too many moving parts." So, I would say that the service is good, but make sure that you follow up with them and make sure that the truck drivers take the stuff to your doorstep if that's what you are paying for. You don't want your stuff to be unattended in some apartment lobby while you're in your apartment waiting for it and the drivers are out enjoying Miller Time, right?
