The Department of Asian Studies and the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin will host the first Taiwan seminar featuring two famous Taiwanese writers -- 朱天文 & 劉克襄 on November 9, 2009. Please refer to the following information.

The first Taiwan Seminar of the 2009-2010 academic year features two Chinese writers from Taiwan, Ms. Chu T’ien-wen and Mr. Liu Ke-Hsiang. Ms. Chu is a leading fiction writer in Taiwan today. The English translation of her 1994 novel The Notes of A Desolate Man is published by the Columbia University Press. She is also a screenwriter well-known for her collaboration with the Taiwan New Cinema director, Hou Hsiao-Hsien (City of Sadness, Dust In the Wind, Flowers in Shanghai, Three Times, Café Lumiere, etc.) Mr. Liu Ke-Hsiang is known for his new-style poetry, fiction writing, and essays. His topics range from contemporary culinary culture in Taiwan to animal studies.

Sponsored by the Council of Cultural Affairs of the Republic of China in Taiwan, and the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation Inter-University Center for Sinology, the Taiwan Writers Delegation is invited to visit eight selected universities in the North America: University of British Columbia, Harvard University, Wellesley College, Yale University, Washington University, University of Texas at Austin, California Institute of Technology, and UCLA.

* A reception will precede the seminar at 3:00PM.
**The seminar will be conducted in Chinese.
